Policy #26: Student Dismissal

26.1 Purpose

The Institution has the right to dismiss a student at any point if a student fails to meet any of the stated academic or clinical competencies or admission requirements of the program. If a student has been placed on Academic and Clinical Probation and the agreed-upon probationary period expires before a resolution is reached, the Registrar will provide written notice to the student informing them of their dismissal from the program.

26.2 Criteria for Dismissal After Academic and Clinical Probation

  1. The student’s failure to meet the predetermined conditions of their Academic and Clinical Probation within the agreed-upon timeframe.

26.3 Criteria for Immediate Dismissal

  1. The student’s failure to provide a passing Vulnerable Sectors check as a prerequisite to Clinical Placement.
  2. The student engaged in illegal behaviour within the program.
  3. The student was admitted to the program based on meeting the admission requirements that were later discovered to be misrepresented or false.

26.4 Procedure for Dismissal

  1. A formal, signed Notice of Dismissal will be issued to the student from the Registrar’s Office.
  2. An incomplete transcript will be issued to the student and electronically stored as per the guidelines established by the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB).
  3. The student’s CiiAT accounts (Google Workspace and Moodle) will be disabled immediately.
  4. The student is able to file an appeal through the Program Advisory Committee and the Program Advisory Committee will review the decision to dismiss and can recommend extending the probationary period as an alternative to dismissal or upholding the dismissal decision.
  5. The student who has been dismissed should not reapply to the program as they will not be accepted.

26.5 Filing a Complaint Regarding a Decision

A student enrolled in an approved program that, if he or she is dissatisfied with the determination, and has been misled by the institution regarding any significant aspect of that program, they may file a complaint with the Private Training Institutions Branch within one year of the date they complete, are dismissed from, or withdraw from the program.
