Policy #10: Applications and Admissions
10.1 Purpose
Admission to the Canadian International Institute of Art Therapy is competitive, as space is limited. At CiiAT, we are committed to a thorough and holistic evaluation of our applicants to ensure they are well-prepared for the rigors of our Art Psychotherapy Diploma program. Each applicant’s portfolio and interview will be assessed based on a comprehensive rubric. Please note that the minimum admission requirements cannot be waived by the Institute or by the student. Students not meeting these requirements may request an Equivalency Assessment (EA).
10.2 Application Materials Required for the Art Psychotherapy Diploma
- A completed copy of the application form;
- An undergraduate degree in social sciences, the arts or a related field (the undergraduate degree requirement may be met through a documented Equivalency Assessment);
- Three (3) psychology courses such as Introduction to Psychology, Child and Adolescent Development, Human Development, Abnormal Psychology, Theories of Personality, Developmental Psychology, History of Psychology, and Counseling Skills;
- A minimum of three (3) years of education completed in English or evidence of achievement in a recognized standardized language test/assessment at an overall level equivalent to IELTS 5.5 (academic) or higher;
- A current resume;
- Relevant transcripts and certificates;
- A portfolio of 10 pieces of artwork, exhibiting a variety of media, and expressions. The portfolio will clearly depict the artwork being assessed and include the title, media, dimensions, year of completion, and artist statement;
- Successful completion of an oral intake interview;
- Recommended:
- Previous work or volunteer experience in education, counselling, rehabilitation, psychiatry, or social services
- Art therapy workshops or group
- Personal experience with therapy or art therapy
10.3 Portfolio Evaluation
- Experience with Various Art Forms
- Assessing the breadth and depth of the applicant’s engagement with different media.
- Skill and Ability in Visual Arts
- Evaluating technical proficiency, creativity and interest in exploration.
- Use of Art for Personal Expression
- Understanding the emotional and personal significance conveyed through the applicant’s art.
- Capacity for Cognitive and Emotional Reflection
- Analyzing the depth of the applicant’s reflections on their art and its impact.
10.4 Interview Evaluation
- Understanding of Program Requirements and Commitments
- Evaluating knowledge of the program’s demands and the applicant’s preparedness.
- Knowledge of Art Psychotherapy and Relevant Regulations
- Assessing familiarity with the field and compliance requirements.
- Executive Functioning
- Observing the applicant’s ability to manage emotions effectively.
- Reasons for Choosing Art Psychotherapy
- Understanding the applicant’s motivation for selecting art psychotherapy over traditional psychotherapy.
- Communication Skills
- Evaluating clarity, confidence, and effectiveness in communication.
- Evidence of Cognitive and Emotional Reflection
- Assessing the applicant’s ability to reflect deeply and insightfully.
Additionally, we review each applicant’s academic transcripts and work experience to ensure a well-rounded understanding of their background and qualifications. This structured assessment process ensures that our students are not only technically proficient but also personally and professionally prepared for a career in art psychotherapy.
