Clinical Placement Application Process

CiiAT’s Art Psychotherapy Diploma students generally begin their clinical placement five or six months into the program, and are permitted eighteen months to complete all of their clinical placement requirements. All clinical placements must be approved by the clinical team prior to the student art therapist commencing their clinical placement. To receive approval for a placement plan, student art therapists must submit a successful and complete Clinical Placement Application to the clinic team by the established deadlines. Additionally, student art therapists must take note of the requirements for any additional documentation from their desired placement and be prepared to provide the additional details and documentation for their application submission (e.g., if a student art therapist was applying to do their clinical placement at their workplace or a Long-Term Care Home).

Student art therapists are advised to start their clinical placement search for an appropriate site early, at the latest the search should be underway by month two of the program. Some clinical placement sites, such as schools or Long-Term Care Homes, may require additional documentation that the student must submit along with their electronically submitted Clinical Placement Application.

The Clinical Placement Application is intended for all clinical placements completed outside of CiiAT. Students are encouraged to complete a portion of their direct client contact hours in the Virtual Art Therapy Clinic (VATC) which would not require this application to be submitted.

Clinical Placement Application Deadlines

Each cohort has its own Clinical Placement Application deadline ending at 8:55 PM PST/11:55 PM EST on their respective date for their very first placement site. Any subsequent placement sites have no particular deadline.

The Clinical Placement Application deadline for any site requiring an affiliation agreement will be one month earlier.

The Clinical Placement Application is located here on the CiiAT website. The form is completed and submitted electronically through the website. The Clinical Placement Application must be submitted on or before the stated deadline for the cohort you are a part of.

1. Connect with the desired site and share information about CiiAT’s clinical placement using the resources provided and/or your own resources that have been properly vetted for accuracy by CiiAT.

2. If the site responds positively, then request that the site provide you with the necessary information to complete the Clinical Placement Application.

3. Submit the completed Clinical Placement Application, including all required supporting documentation for the application and placement site to be reviewed. Incomplete applications will not be accepted, and submitting one will increase the waiting time for review.

4. The application will be reviewed by the appropriate team, and students will be notified if documentation is missing or incomplete.

5. If the student does not submit their first initial Clinical Placement Application by the above specified deadline, the student will be at risk of not completing their hours within their allotted program timeframe which may result in additional fees.
