PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
- Masters degree in Social Sciences, the Arts or a related field (the undergraduate degree requirement may be met through a documented Equivalency Assessment)
- 3 psychology courses such as:
- Introduction to Psychology
- Child and Adolescent Development
- Human Development
- Abnormal Psychology
- Theories of Personality
- Developmental Psychology
- History of Psychology
- Counseling Skills
- A minimum of three years of experience in education completed in English
- A current resume
- Certificates and transcripts
- Portfolio of 10 pieces of artwork
- Successful completion of an oral intake interview
- A non-refundable application fee of $150 is required to be submitted along with the application package

PROGRAM OUTLINE |
- The Art Psychotherapy Diploma (APD) program is a dynamic, comprehensive, and academically rigorous program that nourishes creativity, encourages critical thinking, and welcomes unique perspectives. Experiential and theoretical learning experiences foster student competence, flexibility, and professional skill development that enables them to meet the complex demands of today’s clinical workplaces and diverse client needs. CiiAT ensures that students are actively involved in shaping their learning environment while implementing new research and ideas in practice. Graduates of the program become leaders in the field in the areas of professional practice, research, and theoretical implementation.
- This diploma program prepares students for a career as a Professional Art Therapist and is recognized by the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA), the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), and this program is registered with the BC Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training through the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU)

STUDENT AGREEMENT |
- Enrollment in the program is subject to ongoing reviews for both academic and clinical competencies, to be conducted by CiiAT’s faculty
- I understand that it is recommended that I seek personal psychotherapy during my studies and practicum as recommended by the advisory panel or my supervisor
- All tuition payments are the student's sole responsibility, as this program does not qualify for student loans.
- Although the program and course schedules are made available to students, they are subject to change.
- In addition to the course dates and times, students must attend supervision and are encouraged to attend study groups and office hours at various times throughout the program.
- Tuition for this program covers taking each of the relevant courses once. Additional tuition will be incurred if you need to retake a course or complete it beyond the allotted time.
- Attendance is mandatory in all synchronous courses, clinical programming, and orientation sessions.
- Completing all clinical placement requirements within the time allocated and passing all clinical competencies are mandatory for graduation.
- Classes are scheduled in the PDT/PST timezone, and students must be willing to attend all classes as scheduled.
- Students must have the flexibility to attend class and school commitments as the program requires.
- Completing all academic requirements to a minimum 70% (B-) grade is mandatory for graduation.
- All class participants must have cameras and microphones on at all times.
- All classes are recorded and the recordings remain the property of the school (CiiAT). Recordings are used for educational purposes.
- Class recordings are not public and will only be seen by those specified.

STATEMENT OF STUDENT RIGHTS |
CiiAT is certified with the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the British Columbia Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
Before you enrol at a certified private training institution, you should be aware of your rights and responsibilities.
You have the right to be treated fairly and respectfully by the institution.
You have the right to a student enrolment contract that includes the following information:
- amount of tuition and any additional fee for your program
- refund policy
- if your program includes a work experience, the requirements to participate in the work experience and the geographic area where it will be provided
- whether the program was approved by PTIRU or does not require approval.
Make sure you read the contract before signing. The institution must provide you with a signed copy.
You have the right to access the institution’s dispute resolution process and to be protected against retaliation for making a complaint.
You have the right to make a claim to PTIRU for a tuition refund if:
- your institution ceased to hold a certificate before you completed an approved program
- you were misled about a significant aspect of your approved program.
You must file the claim within one year of completing, being dismissed or withdrawing from your program.

WORK EXPERIENCE |
Requirements for participation:
- Criminal Record Check: A Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search must be provided.
- Clinical Competencies Evaluation: Students must meet the standards of CiiAT’s Clinical Competencies evaluation, based on the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA) Standards of Practice and the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) Entry-to-Practice Competencies.
- Required Courses: The following courses must be successfully completed:
101 - History, Theories, and Approaches 102 - Ethical and Legal Considerations 116 - The Reality of Virtual Art Therapy 117 - Mind, Body, and Media
- Orientation: Mandatory attendance at the Clinical Placement and Supervision Orientation is required.
- Tuition fees cover the costs for a maximum of 18 months of supervision and clinical placement administration. Any additional costs related to attending clinical placement sites or site-specific materials are not included in the tuition and are the responsibility of the student. Geographic area or region of the Province where the work experience will be provided: The Institution will provide the opportunity for the student to complete the clinical placement virtually or within the student’s community.
Number of hours of the work experience: 300-350 hours

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS |
- The Art Psychotherapy Diploma was reviewed and approved by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training.
- The Art Psychotherapy Diploma, as outlined, meets the educational standards of the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA).
- The Art Psychotherapy Diploma is recognized as an education and training program, with clinical experience (CE) recognition, by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
- Graduates of CiiAT’s Art Psychotherapy Diploma are eligible to become professional members of CATA, and CRPO.
